Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary

Lola ya bonobo is the worlds only sanctuary for orphaned bonobo and a member of the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance.It was founded  by Claudine Andre and  has been located just south of the suburb of Kimwenza at Petites Chutes de la Lukaya, kinshasa in the Democratic republic of Congo. Lola ya Bonobo is the world’s only organization to provide lifetime care to bonobos orphaned by the illegal trade in endangered wildlife.

Lola ya bonobo means “ Paradise of the bonobos” and the sanctuary is 8km off the Matadi road,ninety minutes west of Kinshasa, just beyond the city’s sprawl. Long thought to be chimpanzees, bonobos are actually a separate species known for being much more peaceful than their cousins. They’re also endangered, with only around 50,000 surviving in the wild.

Bonobos are brought in as young infants when confiscated from the poachers who sell them as pets, after killing their parents for bush meat trade in Congo.These bonobos begin life at the sanctuary with handy care from a substitute human mother, but ready to be united into  a peer group, and shortly afterwards into of the large mixed-age social groups.

Boyoma falls

Boyoma falls, formerly known as “Stanley falls”, consists of seven cataracts, each extending in not more than 5m, extending over more than 100km along the curve of Lualaba River between the river port towns of ubundu and Kisangani/Boyoma in the Orientale province of the Democratic Republic of congo. The last rapids are just to the east of town, which is where the Wagenia fishermen set up their innovative fishing traps.

Lualaba river becomes the Congo river at the bottom of the rapids, and the seven cataracts have a total drop of 61m.
